Spring Clean Your Finances: How to Create Space for Business Growth

Spring Clean Your Finances: How to Create Space for Business Growth
Spring is here! One of my favourite seasons. Fresh, crisp mornings and beautiful sunshiny days. It makes me want to open the windows, breathe deeply, and soak in that sense of new beginnings.
As I look out my window, I can see the first flowers turning their faces towards the sun… but I can also see the weeds poking their heads up out of the ground. And, right on cue, the first “spring declutter” email has landed in my inbox.
It got me thinking, our business finances are no different.
Just like we spring clean our homes and tidy our gardens this time of year, it’s the perfect opportunity to give your money systems a little refresh, too.
When things feel messy or cramped, growth slows down. Things get tangled in the weeds. But when we spring clean our finances, we create a fresh start. A chance to untangle what’s no longer working and see things with new eyes. We make space for clarity, confidence, and growth.
Signs It Might Be Time to Refresh Your Finances
If any of these feel familiar, it could be time to give your finances a little extra attention:
- Your bookkeeping system feels harder than it should be
- You’re never quite sure where your money’s going
- You look at your reports but don’t understand them. Where’s the profit you apparently made?
- You avoid looking at your financial reports completely
- BAS and payroll deadlines keep sneaking up on you
- There never seems to be enough money to pay the bills, let alone yourself
You’re definitely not alone if this list resonates and the good news is, you can change it.
5 Simple Steps to Spring Clean Your Finances
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. Small, intentional steps can create huge relief:
1. Declutter Your Accounts
Close bank accounts you don’t use or open more with a specific purpose. Tidy up your Xero chart of accounts. Make your money flow easier to follow.
2. Review Your Allocations
Check your Profit First percentages: Are they still right for where your business is today? A small tweak now can create big results later.
3. Check Your Subscriptions
Review your recurring expenses. Are you still using everything you’re paying for? If not, cancel what no longer serves you and free up that cashflow.
4. Reset Your Rhythms
Set up a simple weekly “money date”. Money Monday or Financial Freedom Friday, try just 15 minutes to review your accounts, allocations, and upcoming bills.
5. Set One Clear Goal for the Next 3 Months
Choose one priority for the next three months. Whether it’s paying yourself consistently, getting ahead on BAS, or building a profit buffer, focus creates clarity.
Why September Is the Perfect Time
September is the sweet spot. There’s still time to make changes that will create real impact this year, but not so much time that it feels overwhelming.
A few small shifts now can help you:
- Smooth out seasonal cashflow
- Reduce last-minute BAS stress
- Build healthy profit habits that stick
- Step into the next season with clarity and confidence

Spring isn’t just about planting new seeds in the garden, it’s about planting new habits and systems in your business too. If you’re ready to stop feeling stuck and start feeling supported, I’d love to help you create a plan that works for your business and your life.
